CHICAGO — The Mets ran into a momentum buster on Friday, in the form of rain clouds.

It was already raining and precipitation was forecast for much of the day when the Cubs postponed their scheduled afternoon game against the Mets at Wrigley Field. The game will be made up Saturday as part of a split doubleheader, with first pitches at 2:20 p.m. and 8:05 p.m. Eastern

The Mets plan to send Taijuan Walker to the mound for Game 1 against Marcus Stroman. Max Scherzer is scheduled for the nightcap against Drew Smyly.

The postponement came as the Mets had won three of four games, including a 2-1 series victory at NL East-rival Atlanta. The Mets beat the Cubs 8-0 on Thursday behind six shutout innings from Carlos Carrasco and an offensive attack that included homers from Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso.

Carrasco, with his 10 wins, became the first Mets pitcher to reach double-digit victories in the first half since R.A. Dickey in 2012. Carrasco is tied for fourth in the major leagues in victories. He reached double digits in wins before the All-Star break three times with Cleveland (2015, 2017 and 2018).

The Mets have homered in nine straight games at Wrigley Field. Over that stretch (which began on Aug. 29, 2018) they have hit 16 homers. Alonso owns six of those homers, in only eight career games at the Friendly Confines.

Alonso needs one RBI to set a pre-All-Star break franchise record. The first baseman is tied with David Wright (74) for most RBIs in Mets history before the break.
