Maybe this is why the Wilpons hired Sandy Alderson shortly before they put their hands out looking for cash.

Alderson, who said on Monday the recent announcement that up to 25 percent of the organization up for sale wouldn’t impact how he did business, didn’t sound like he was ready to open the purse strings anytime soon.

“There’s something to be said for shopping at Filene’s Basement,” the new GM said on Tuesday at an event at Fordham University’s Lincoln center campus.

Alderson was referring to the discount clothing store.

“We hope to be able to shop on all levels,” Alderson said. “But there’s stuff to be found in the basement.”
