Bobby Abreu is on his way to provide offense off the bench for the Mets and Joel Hanrahan is still a possibility to join the bullpen.

“The bullpen has been an issue for us a while,” GM Sandy Alderson said Monday. “He’s out there and is available, so why shouldn’t we see how he’s progressing?”

The Mets were among the teams to attend Hanrahan’s workout last week, when the right-hander who is recovering from Tommy John surgery was clocked at 92-93 mph.

“He’s definitely made progress,” Alderson said after speaking, along with Dillon Gee, with fellow veterans at VA New York Harbor Healthcare Hospital.

While Hanrahan is still a free agent, Abreu arrived at Citi Field Monday after being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas. Andrew Brown was sent to Vegas to make room for Abreu.

“He’s a professional hitter,” Alderson said of Abreu. “He’s a great hitting role model for our players.”

Alderson tried to bring in Abreu after the outfielder opened eyes while playing winter ball in Venezuela for Mets hitting coach Dave Hudgens. With Ike Davis in Pittsburgh, Abreu becomes the Mets’ primary pinch hitter.
