METS GO TO CHURCH
The Mets moved one step closer yesterday to clearing their deck of arbitration-eligible players by signing outfielder Ryan Church to a one-year, $2 million deal.
Church, obtained from the Senators this offseason as part of the Lastings Milledge trade, is pegged as the Amazin’s starting right fielder going into spring training. Church hit .272 with 15 homers and 70 RBIs with Washington last year.
Church’s signing leaves pitcher Oliver Perez as the Mets’ last arbitration-eligible player. They haven’t faced an arbitration hearing in 16 years.
