Hardly content with their starting rotation headed to spring training, the Mets are among the teams interested in Oakland’s Gio Gonzalez, according to a source.
The price tag could be significant — with it likely the Mets would have to include Ike Davis and Jon Niese in any deal to acquire the 26-year-old lefty, whom Oakland has dangled in recent weeks. The Rangers, Tigers and Red Sox are among the other teams asking about Gonzalez.
With Johan Santana hardly a sure thing to be ready for Opening Day, the Mets view Gonzalez as a potential ace in the making. Last season he went 16-12 with a 3.12 ERA, with 197 strikeouts in 202 innings.
