Two of the Mets’ draft picks in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft last week still have their seasons alive in this year’s College World Series.

Fifth-rounder Matt den Dekker from Florida and 24th rounder Erik Goeddel from UCLA continue to ply their trades for their respective schools. A senior, den Dekker went 2-for-7 with two runs scored, a RBI and three walks as the Gators swept their Super Regional matchup with rival Miami and advanced to the College World SEries.

Goeddel, a draft-eligible sophomore that the thrifty Mets will unlikely be able to sign away from the Bruins, pitched a perfect inning Friday night in UCLA’s 4-3 loss to Cal State-Fullerton in the first game of that Super Regional. UCLA came back to win last night’s game, 11-7 in 10 innings, and face Fullerton tonight in the third and decisive game, with a trip to Omaha on the line.

Another local connection in that series is Gerrit Cole, UCLA’s No. 1 starter, who took the loss Friday after allowing four runs on five hits in 6.2 innings, striking out seven and walking two. Cole was the Yankees first-round pick in 2008, but ended up going to UCLA after his family decided, despite considerable effort on the part of the Yankees, that they preferred he’d go to college.

Cole, who was a Boras client in ’08 (and almost certainly will be again next year) is projected as a Top 5 pick in the 2011 draft.
