Jacob deGrom becomes the fifth player in Mets history to receive a contract worth more than $100 million. The Amazin’s didn’t necessarily get what they paid for in the first four cases. Here’s a look:
Carlos Beltran
Seven years, $119 million (2005-11)
He made four All-Star games in seven seasons and finished fourth in MVP voting in 2006, but he famously struck out to end the NLCS that year.
Johan Santana
Six years, $137.5 million (2008-14)
He finished third in Cy Young voting in his first season in Flushing, won 13 games the next year and threw the only Mets’ no-hitter in 2012, but injuries took their toll and he never pitched for them after that season.
David Wright
Eight years, $138 million (2012-21)
The Mets captain played up to his contract the first season, but injuries quickly took their toll and he played just 75 combined games in 2015 and 2016 before missing all of 2017 and making a token two-game appearance last year.
Yoenis Cespedes
Four years, $110 million (2017-20)
Re-signed after he hit the free-agent market, Cespedes has been a bust since then. He missed half of 2017 and all but 38 games last year. He’s expected to be out until at least the All-Star break this year as he recovers from heel surgeries.
