If the Mets want to replace Omar Minaya or embattled assistant Tony Bernazard, they now have a qualified replacement in the same building. Wayne Krivsky, a longtime baseball executive fired two months ago as GM of the Reds, was hired by the Mets today as Minaya’s special assistant.

Minaya did not return a call seeking comment, but the Mets announced in a news release that the 54-year-old Krivsky’s main responsibility would be scouting the major leagues.

But recent precedent involving Krivsky himself indicates this move might not bode well for Minaya or Bernazard, the Mets’ VP for player development who is under heavy scrutiny for his behind-the-scenes role in this week’s “Midnight Massacre” firing of Willie Randolph.

The Reds hired former Cardinals GM Walt Jocketty this past January as a special advisor, then promoted Jocketty to the GM spot when Krivsky was fired in late April.
