LAKELAND, Fla. — Mets reliever Jason Isringhausen survived a throwing session on flat ground Tuesday, his first action since taking an anti-inflammatory drug for his right elbow.

If all goes well, Isringhausen will throw a bullpen session Wednesday and return to game action by the end of the week. The 38-year-old righty is attempting to secure a job in the Mets’ bullpen and has been considered for the setup role.

Isringhausen, who has undergone three Tommy John surgeries in his career, said his soreness has been confined to a muscle near the elbow.

“There won’t be any problem,” he said. “I can already tell. It actually feels like I haven’t thrown in five days. That’s the only thing.”

Isringhausen has a 1.50 ERA in six relief appearances this spring. He has told the Mets he will not accept a minor-league assignment. Until experiencing soreness over the weekend, Isringhausen hadn’t encountered any trouble with the elbow this spring.

“Old muscles grow tight and then you’ve got to throw it in ice,” Isringhausen said. “It’s fine as far as I’m concerned.”
