Former Mets star Rusty Staub suffered a heart attack on a flight from Ireland to JFK, according to a source, but is recovering in a hospital.
According to a statement released by the Mets, the flight was diverted back to Ireland, where the 71-year-old Staub received medical attention.
“Rusty is now resting comfortably in a hospital,” the statement said. “The prognosis is good and Rusty and his family ask that we respect his privacy during this period. He is in the thoughts and prayers of the Mets organization.”
Staub, who had two stints in a Mets uniform over his 23-year major league career, serves as a club ambassador, attending several games a season at Citi Field and greeting fans.
