JUPITER, Fla. — John Maine delivered his longest performance of the spring, allowing two hits in five innings in the Mets’ 2-1 loss to the Cardinals.
“John Maine competed today,” Jerry Manuel said. “He had some life on his fastball, and I felt really good about that. Everybody did well. … A 2-1 ballgame in Florida with the wind blowing out, hard infield, four hits, you have to be excited about that.”
Cris Carpenter held a Mets lineup mostly devoid of likely Opening Day starters hitless through four innings.
Trailing 2-0, Fernando Tatis broke up Carpenter’s no-hitter with a leadoff single in the fifth inning. Frank Catalalanotto followed with a double, scoring Tatis.
Carpenter did not allow a hit the rest of the way.
