Marcus Stroman’s initial thought was to wait five days for his next start, but that plan changed after he felt strong in a throwing session Monday.

In need of another starting pitcher for Tuesday’s doubleheader against the Phillies at Citi Field, the Mets will turn to Stroman in the nightcap. Taijuan Walker will start Game 1 in his previously scheduled spot and Monday’s rained out starter, David Peterson, will shift to Wednesday (against Zack Wheeler).

Stroman, whose Sunday start against the Marlins ended after only seven minutes — the game was suspended because of rain — had been a consideration to start Wednesday but told manager Luis Rojas he was more comfortable sticking with his routine and pitching on the fifth day. The positive throwing session and doubleheader changed his mind.

“We want the guys out there being the best version of themselves,” Rojas said, “so for him to come and talk to us about feeling good and going out there and pitching in a doubleheader scenario like we are having now, it’s great to hear. I am glad he is stepping up for the team.”

There is rain in the forecast for Thursday, when Jacob deGrom is scheduled to pitch the series finale. The Mets open a three-game series in Colorado on Friday and could potentially use Joey Lucchesi to start that game, if he’s not needed from the bullpen beforehand.

Carlos Carrasco may “soon” report to the Mets’ alternate-site camp, according to Rojas, to begin pitching simulated games. The right-hander, who is rehabbing a right hamstring injury, will likely throw five innings of live batting practice in his next outing. Carrasco has also been participating in fielding drills and taking batting practice. Rojas noted that Carrasco’s running will have to be evaluated due to the nature of the injury.

Seth Lugo is still playing catch in Port St. Lucie but hasn’t progressed to throwing off the mound. That could happen next week, according to Rojas. The right-hander is rehabbing from February surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow. … Drew Smith, who is rehabbing from a right shoulder injury, has begun playing catch.

The Mets have slashed .146/.351/.171 with runners in scoring position this season. The .146 batting average ranks 29th in the major leagues.
