Fred Wilpon said it was “painful” watching Mets games last season.

The team’s owner was asked about the University of Michigan football team Monday and he responded: “What football team? It’s painful to watch that, but it was painful to watch a baseball game this year, too.”

Wilpon’s team suffered through another sub-.500 season and heads into the offseason with assurances it will spend more money than in recent years, insisting financial woes are a thing of the past.

Wilpon, who was at NYU speaking on a panel about integrity in sports, declined to talk further about his team.
