The Mets avoided arbitration with Mike Pelfrey on Tuesday, agreeing to a one-year deal worth close to $4 million, according to a source.
The two sides had until Tuesday to come to terms before heading to arbitration. The Mets still have two players, R.A. Dickey and Angel Pagan, who are headed in that direction.
Pelfrey faded after a fast start last year, but is coming off his best season, finishing 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA. He figures to be the Mets’ No. 1 starter until Johan Santana returns from surgery, which likely won’t happen until June, at the earliest.
