VIERA, Fla. — Mike Pelfrey allowed four home runs to the Nationals in 4 2/3 windy innings today.
Pelfrey gave up seven hits and six runs (five earned), struck out three and walked one. His spring ERA rose to 7.36 in the 7-5 loss.
Ryan Zimmerman and Josh Willingham hit two homers each, with a 20 mph wind blowing from right to left field.
“You’ve got to pitch sometimes to your conditions,” Pelfrey said. “I did a bad job of executing on fastballs and [the homers] were all on fastballs.”
Zimmerman hit a towering, wind-aided solo drive in the first inning, and a two-run shot in the fifth. His first drive just carried over the glove of Mets left fielder Frank Catalanotto.
“That’s an out during the regular season,” Zimmerman said. “On a windy day like today, you can’t look too much into that stuff. The second one was hit better, but the first one was not.”
Willingham had a solo shot in the second and a two-run homer in the fourth.
Pelfrey said his slider, splitter and curveball have been effective pitches.
“I feel good,” Pelfrey said. “Physically I didn’t feel tired, either. I felt like I could keep going.”
Jenrry Mejia relieved Pelfrey and pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and walking one. The Mets plan to use Mejia tomorrow, testing him to see if he can fill a bullpen role.
“We’ll see what his stuff looks like on back-to-back days,” Jerry Manuel said. “And we’ll see what he looks like.”
Ryota Igarashi gave up two hits with two walks, leading to the Nationals scoring a seventh-inning run.
Chris Carter went 3-for-5 and raised his Grapefruit League batting average to .444 with three homers and eight RBIs.
“He’s put his name into the hat very strongly,” Manuel said.
