The Mets’ season is all but lost, but fans had something to cheer about Thursday.

Rookie pitcher Matt Harvey struck out 11 batters in his Major League debut – surpassing the team record held by Tom Seaver and Bill Denehy, who each registered nine strikeouts in their first games.

Harvey gave up three hits in 5.1 innings pitched against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was also 2-2 at the plate with a double, and the Mets won 3-1.

But oh, those strikeouts … Baseballreference.com research shows only 22 other pitchers in MLB history with 10 or more strikeouts in their debut, including Stephen Strasburg, Mark Prior, Tim Hudson and Juan Marichal.

Mets fans took to Twitter to celebrate Harvey’s performance.

“The Matt Harvey Era has begun,” one person wrote. “This season isn’t over.”
