Mets reel in top pick Matz
(UPDATED: 1 A.M.) It went right down to the wire, but the Mets reportedly signed top pick Steven Matz at tonight’s midnight deadline with a bonus of $895,000.
Club officials would neither confirm nor deny the signing. Matz, a left-hander from Ward Melville High School in Long Island who throws in the mid-90s, was a second-round choice (72nd overall).
Matz had been committed to Coastal Carolina if the Mets weren’t able to sign him. The Mets did not have a first-round pick in this year’s amateur draft because of veteran free-agent signings. The Mets weren’t so fortunate with their sixth-round pick, right-handed pitcher David Buchanan of Chipola (Fla.) Junior College. Buchanan did not sign and is going to Georgia State instead.
