Jose Reyes said the “best part” about his hamstring injury being healed is that he is back around his Mets teammates, after spending most of last season rehabbing on his own.
The best part for the Mets will be having their speedy shortstop back at the top of their lineup. And Reyes said he could be more dangerous than the player he was before suffering a hamstring tear that kept him out of the lineup for the final 122 games last season.
Reyes went through a rigorous offseason workout program to prepare for his return.
“I can come back better, a lot better, because the last 14 weeks, I’ve been working so hard just to get ready for spring training,” Reyes told NJ.com. “Now, I’m ready. Maybe I’m going to be a little better.”
Reyes’ injury plagued the Mets last year as the shortstop’s return seemed constantly around the corner, except it never came. Reyes said he fully recovered from the injury four or five weeks ago and has no doubt he is fully healthy.
“I have to think that way,” he said. “I have to think it’s over. I’ve been working so hard to try to stay healthy on the field, and I have to think that way. I have to be strong in my mind. Hopefully that will never happen again.”
Reyes refused to blame the team for last year’s ongoing injury saga.
“I’m the guy that loves to be on the field. I went back to the field to help my teammates,” Reyes said. “I think I tried to come back soon.”
