The medical news just keeps getting worse for the Mets.
Jose Reyes left Sunday’s game in the bottom of the second inning with stiffness in his left hamstring after he pulled up running out a grounder to third in the first inning. He will undergo an MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
The shortstop already spent time on the disabled list last month with a strain to the same hamstring. No word yet on how serious this injury is, but the fact that he’s getting an MRI is not a good sign and is another blow for Reyes.
The severity of the injury could play a role in what the impending free agent can expect to get with his new contract, since Reyes- who leads the NL with a .336 average, 80 runs, 16 triples and 50 multi-hit games- has battled injuries to both hamstrings and his oblique in the past.
He was replaced in the leadoff spot by Willie Harris, who delivered an RBI bloop single and remained in the game at second base, while Justin Turner shifted to shortstop.
The Mets already received discouraging news regarding Johan Santana and Ike Davis, both of whom may not play again this season.
