Robinson Cano spent two weeks as a spectator, even traveling cross-country with the Mets so he wouldn’t feel dissociated from the team.

Tuesday night he is hoping to be an active participant again, as Cano said he expects to be activated from the injured list to face the Giants at Citi Field.

“I am sad not being out there, because I love to play the game,” said Cano, who has been rehabbing from a left quadriceps strain. “It doesn’t matter for me how good or bad I am doing. In this game you have always got tomorrow. I am looking forward to Tuesday hopefully and then I am tired of sitting and watching the game.”

Cano accompanied the Mets on the last trip, with stops in Los Angeles and Arizona, in part to work out with the team. But he also wanted to be present for the games.

“I hate to be home watching the games when I can be here and I don’t care how far I have to travel,” Cano said.

And Cano, who has posted a disappointing .658 OPS, certainly hasn’t given up on the season, even as the Mets sit three games below .500.

“The worst thing you can do is start hanging your head and you start thinking about down the road when it’s not even half of the season,” he said. “We have got to just keep winning games and focus on our team.”

Dominic Smith received an MRI exam on his right thumb, the results of which the Mets aren’t planning to release until Tuesday. Smith said he hyperextended the thumb on a swing Saturday, but homered later in the game. He was scratched from Sunday’s lineup.

Manager Mickey Callaway indicated Sunday he wasn’t planning any changes to his upcoming rotation. The alignment would give Jason Vargas and Zack Wheeler the starting assignments at Yankee Stadium next week in the Subway Series.
