SAN DIEGO — Mets second baseman Robinson Cano moved into elite company with a first-inning double against Padres starter Cal Quantrill, becoming the third active player with at least 2,500 career hits. Cano went 4-for-5 for good measure in the Mets’ 7-6 comeback victory over the Padres on Tuesday night and now stands at 2,503 hits.

Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera are the only other active players to reach that plateau. All-time there are 101 players with at least 2,500 hits.

Among players born in the Dominican Republic, the 36-year-old Cano is sixth all-time in hits behind Adrian Beltre, Pujols, Vladimir Guerrero, Julio Franco and Manny Ramirez.
