Jacob deGrom is allegedly healthy.
The bad news is everything else.
Zack Wheeler is being shut down for the season, the Mets announced Thursday in a press release that spells out just how disastrous this season has become.
Wheeler, making his return from 2015 Tommy John surgery, has been on the DL since late July with a stress reaction in his right, throwing arm. It was his second DL stint in a little over a month; he has made just four starts since June 19 and will finish his season at 86 1/3 innings thrown with a 5.21 ERA, setting himself up for another innings limit next season if he sticks in the rotation.
In other Mets news, the team announced everything from a Jeurys Familia return Friday to a rehabbing Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard to a Steven Matz who had successful surgery. So many of the Mets’ frustrations, in one place:
Jeurys Familia – Will be in the clubhouse today and will be activated before Friday’s game at Washington.
Matt Harvey – Will start a rehabilitation game for St. Lucie (A) on Saturday at the Palm Beach Cardinals.
Noah Syndergaard – Will leave for Port St. Lucie today to continue his throwing program, which includes live batting practice.
Seth Lugo – Expected to throw a bullpen on Friday.
David Wright – Will participate in baseball activities in Port St. Lucie today.
Zack Wheeler – Will not pitch any more the rest of the season.
Jose Reyes – Eligible to come off the Disabled List on Saturday, August 26.
T.J. Rivera – Currently rehabbing his right arm in Port St. Lucie.
Steven Matz – Underwent successful surgery yesterday to decompress and reposition the ulnar nerve in his left elbow.
Tyler Pill – Underwent arthroscopic elbow debridement surgery yesterday.
A laundry list of injuries and a sell-off later, the Mets are banking on the excitement of Amed Rosario and Dominic Smith and perhaps a late-season return of Wright to keep fans interested.
