DETROIT — The Mets are scheduled for a second doubleheader in three days.
A rainy night at Comerica Park on Tuesday led to the Tigers postponing the opener of their three-game series against the Mets.
The game has been rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Wednesday, with first pitches at 1:40 p.m. and 6:40 p.m.
Joey Lucchesi will start the first game for the Mets, with Max Scherzer scheduled in the nightcap.
The Tigers have Michael Lorenzen and Joey Wentz scheduled.
The Mets just split a doubleheader against the Braves on Monday at Citi Field.
This after games were postponed on Saturday and Sunday.
The first of those games was rescheduled for Aug. 12, when the Braves are in Queens for the final time this season.
Inclement weather postponed Tuesday’s Mets-Tigers series opener. APScherzer and Justin Verlander are returning to action this week, and by the end of next week, another starting pitcher could be back with the Mets.
Carlos Carrasco has emerged as a possibility to rejoin the rotation in “the next 10 days or so,” manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday. The veteran right-hander has been on the injured list since April 18 after he received a cortisone injection for a bone chip in his right elbow.
Showalter said the plan is for Carrasco to pitch in a minor league rehab game before he returns.
Though Carrasco has struggled this season, the manager is convinced the pitcher’s discomfort played a large role. Carrasco pitched to an 8.56 ERA in his three starts.
“I’m thinking that when he comes back this time he’s going to be able to deliver some more competitive outings,” Showalter said. “I really like what we’re seeing with his work days. He’s doing some things we weren’t seeing before, especially with his recovery.”
Lucchesi and Tylor Megill have filling rotation spots for Carrasco and Jose Quintana. The left-hander Quintana is rehabbing following rib surgery and won’t return before July.
Showalter reaffirmed there is nothing wrong physically with Kodai Senga, who is scheduled to pitch the series opener Friday against the Rockies at Citi Field.
The decision to give the right-hander extra days off (he last pitched on April 26) was reached when it became clear the Mets would have an opportunity to rest him once Scherzer and Verlander return to the rotation.
The plan, according to Showalter, is to give Senga extended breaks at various points in the season. Senga previously pitched as part of a six-man rotation in Japan.
Hitting coach Jeremy Barnes was sent back to the hotel with a stomach virus before the opener of a three-game series against the Tigers on Tuesday night.
His duties were to be assumed by assistant hitting coach Eric Hinske.
The Mets are 12-2 this season in games in which they had scored first.
Their .857 winning percentage in such games was second in the NL and fourth in MLB.
