The Mets took it right down to the wire, but they landed their two biggest prizes, signing top pick Matt Harvey, a right-hander from North Carolina, and Greg Peavey, a right-hander from Oregon State.
Harvey, the seventh overall pick in the draft, was considered to be one of the two top high school pitchers in the draft in 2007, along with Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello. But while Porcello went late in the first round, Harvey slipped to the third, where he was taken by the Angels but didn’t sign. He then went on to have an up-and-down first two years at North Carolina before bouncing back in a big way this year.
The right-hander, who has a build similar to the last Mets’ top 10 pick, Mike Pelfrey, went 8-3 with a 3.09 ERA, striking out 102 and walking 35 in 96 innings as a junior. He throws a mid-90s fastball, a mid-80s slider, curveball and a changeup.
Harvey signed for just over $2.5 million, about $400,000 over MLB’s recommended maximum bonus for the seventh selection.
Peavey, who was drafted in the 24th round by the Yankees out of high school in 2007, and as a draft-eligible sophomore last year by the Astros in the 32nd round, was given a signing bonus of $200,000 – $50,000 more than the recommended maximum bonus for draft picks after the fith round.
