Starling Marte’s migraines have concerned the Mets in recent days, and with his ailments still prevalent, Thursday the team placed him on the injured list.

After the Mets’ 6-2 loss to the White Sox, the team was planning to recall Mark Vientos from Triple-A Syracuse to take Marte’s roster spot.

Vientos had a stint with the Mets earlier this season in a bench role. The rookie has 16 homers in 228 at-bats for Syracuse and will likely be a DH consideration in Boston this weekend.

The Mets had to decide before Thursday’s game on Marte’s status if they wanted to have the possibility of backdating an IL stint.

Marte last played Sunday against the Dodgers. His IL stint is backdated to July 17.

“It’s a pretty common thing to get a migraine headache, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone,” manager Buck Showalter said. “I think we have a pretty good chance to get him back on the 27th in a lot better situation.”

Marte has been among the team’s biggest disappointments this season, owning a .254/.308/.332 slash line with five homers and 28 RBIs. Marte has also struggled defensively.

Last offseason he underwent double groin surgery.

Drew Smith’s struggles continued with a brutal sixth inning that was exacerbated by Pete Alonso’s fielding error.

The White Sox scored four runs on three hits and a walk in the inning, but only one run was earned following the error.

It was a third straight outing in which Smith allowed at least one earned run. Overall he owns a 4.65 ERA in 27 appearances this season.

“It’s just command,” Showalter said. “Go back through his outings and where he’s trying to get the baseball and where he can’t get it. Everybody has got a place where you can pitch them. You have got to want to get it there and you have got to get it there in the right sequence, and he’s had trouble doing that.

“He feels good physically, and I can tell by the way the ball is coming out of his hand he just … his breaking ball has been inconsistent.”

Sam Coonrod threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts and one walk in his second appearance with Single-A St. Lucie on a minor league rehab assignment.
