ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — David Wright will be back on the field Monday to start what the Mets hope will be an efficient minor league rehab assignment.

The Mets’ captain is scheduled to be the designated hitter for Single-A St. Lucie in his first game action since he was diagnosed with spinal stenosis in May. Wright is scheduled to play five innings at third base on Tuesday.

According to a club source, the Mets expect Wright to receive at least 30 at-bats in the minors before he’s considered for a return, possibly within 10 days. But that is provided Wright doesn’t incur a setback or need extra rest because of a flare-up in his back.

“He thinks it’s going to be fast, but he doesn’t know either,” manager Terry Collins said after the Mets’ 4-3 loss to the Rays. “He probably is going to play two, get one off, play two, get another one off and then maybe play three.”

Collins has downplayed Michael Conforto’s chances of remaining with the Mets once Michael Cuddyer returns from the disabled list Monday, but general manager Sandy Alderson indicated the rookie outfielder could stay.

“Our mindset is we want the best 25 players we can put on the field,” Alderson said. “So issues of development, etc., are secondary to whether anybody can help us now. That’s all relative based on who is doing what.”

Collins has pointed to the fact the Mets may see five lefty starters in the next week, and Conforto could end up on the bench. If Conforto stays, the Mets are expected to option utilityman Eric Campbell to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Cuddyer, who has recovered from soreness in his left knee, was recently dealing with a bruised toe that he sustained on a foul ball in Port St. Lucie.

Bartolo Colon had a major league-leading 13th start without issuing a walk this season, but it was his 10th career start without a strikeout and his first since July 3, 2013, while with the Athetics, against the White Sox.
