The bad news for the Mets did not end when the season did.
Franklyn Kilome, their fifth-best prospect and second-best pitching prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, had Tommy John surgery Wednesday, the team announced.
Kilome, a 23-year-old the Mets acquired in the Asdrubal Cabrera trade, figures to miss all of 2019 and likely some of the 2020 season, as well.
The hard-throwing, 6-foot-7 right-hander pitched to a 4.03 ERA in seven starts with Double-A Binghamton after the deadline trade, striking out 42 and walking 10 in 38 innings.
“He’s athletic and has the pitch mix of a future starter,” Mets director of minor league operations Ian Levin said in August.
