ESPN’s Keith Law unveiled his prospect rankings today, and, at least by his metrics, the Mets have more minor league talent on the way than the Yankees.
The Mets were 15th – dead in the middle – of Law’s rankings of the minor league systems for each of the 30 organizations. The Yankees, on the other hand, were 25th.
Four Mets made his Top 100 prospects – pitcher Jenrry Mejia (23), infielder Wilmer Flores (41), first baseman Ike Davis (64) and outfielder Fernando Martinez (73). The Yankees had two Top 100 prospects – catcher Jesus Montero (11) and Manny Banuelos (96).
However, it has to be stated that the Yankees’ system would be much better if they hadn’t dealt away Arodys Vizcaino (43, to Braves for Javier Vazquez), Jose Tabata (57, to Pittsburgh for Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte) and Austin Jackson (70, to Detroit for Curtis Granderson) within the last year and a half. That goes without including the many young players (Brett Gardner, Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, etc.) that have contributed to them over the past few years. Outside of Mike Pelfrey, it’s hard to find a lot of guys on the Mets who have come through the system since David Wright and Jose Reyes in the middle of the last decade.
This group of up-and-coming Mets prospects, however, will have a shot to change that.
