WASHINGTON — Trevor May’s return to the Mets bullpen will at least provide the unit with needed depth.

Manager Buck Showalter said the team plans to remove the veteran reliever from the injured list before the series finale against the Nationals on Wednesday. The right-hander has been sidelined since early May, after he was diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right arm.

May appeared in eight games before the diagnosis and pitched to an 8.64 ERA. He arrived before last season on a two-year contract worth $15.5 million.

“I am not going to say he’s any given,” Showalter said Tuesday before the Mets’ 5-1 loss to the Nationals. “But we think some of his inconsistency early on was due to [the injury] and we hope we have got that solved and I think people will be reminded why he was such a good piece for us last year.

“I am hoping that’s a good addition for us. Comparatively speaking to some other things, if we get him back right that is a big piece to add to our bullpen.”

Showalter hinted that he has spoken to Eduardo Escobar about settling into a platoon role in which the veteran infielder will start primarily against lefties. Escobar was on the bench Tuesday, with Luis Guillorme at third base against Nationals right-hander Cory Abbott.

“[Escobar] and I talk every day about something and he’ll put his best foot forward and whatever situation I think he trusts everybody and there’s still going to be some opportunities to get it going from the other side,” Showalter said.

“But I am going to always try to use all our roster and keep everybody in the flow. There’s a lot of good pieces that Billy has put together and it’s up to us as a coaching staff to keep them in the flow.”

Edwin Diaz was named National League Reliever of the Month for July. It was his second straight month winning the award. The right-hander did not allow an earned run in 11 appearances in July and recorded seven saves in as many chances. He entered Tuesday with a 1.51 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 41 ²/₃ innings.
