The Mets are tinkering with Jason Vargas, but not doing anything drastic.
A day after the veteran starting pitcher’s rock bottom in his year-plus tenure with the team, the Mets said they would push his next start a game back.
Manager Mickey Callaway announced Sunday that Jacob deGrom will throw on normal rest Friday in St. Louis, when Vargas was scheduled to go. The 36-year-old will get the ball a day later in possibly his last chance with the team.
Vargas recorded just out Saturday against the Braves, allowing four runs, two hits and three walks. It pushed his ERA to 14.21 in three appearances, a year after it was 5.77 in a disastrous first season with the Mets.
