The Braves now need to take Game 2 to make the playoffs.
If the Mets sweep the doubleheader, they’ll capture the No. 5 seed and play the Padres. In this scenario, the Diamondbacks would be the No. 6 seed — and Atlanta would be eliminated.

You will be talking about Mets 8, Braves 7 for years: astride water coolers, inside watering holes, whenever you find yourself in the company of fellow Mets fans. And it’s likely that will lead to other adjacent subjects of great import.
Was that the greatest regular-season game in Mets history? You might choose to exhaustively comb all 9,963 Mets games on Retrosheet to figure that one out, or simply go with what’s fairly obvious: yes, it most certainly was.
Was Francisco Lindor’s one-out, two-run, ninth-inning home run Monday the biggest homer in Mets history? That’s a little more subjective. Here’s one man’s list, and one man’s order. Happy to hear what will almost certainly be entirely different lists from you:
The Mets rode a two-run Francisco Lindor home run in the top of the ninth to a wild 8-7 victory over the Braves in the first game of a doubleheader to earn an NL wild-card spot and their second postseason appearance in three years at Truist Park in Atlanta on Monday afternoon.
Fittingly the game’s final out was a soft ground ball off closer Edwin Diaz to Lindor by former Mets catcher Travis D’Arnaud.
Pete Alonso missed a chance to drive in the tying run in the top of the sixth. The Mets first baseman grounded to third with runners on the corners and two outs eliminating the chance to tie the game at one.
Pete Alonso singled to end the no-hitter and Starling Marte walked to lead off the inning, but Daysbel Hernández replaced the Braves' starter and struck out the next two batters before Luis Torrens grounded out to end the inning.
Mets starter Joey Lucchesi found himself in a bit of a hole after walking back-to-back batters with one out to put runners on first and second. He managed to get Sean Murphy to pop out to right field and Orlando Arcia grounded out to first to end the threat.
The Astros and Tigers are preparing to face one another in the American League Wild Card series, but on Monday they were tuned in to the action in Atlanta, according to video posted from the teams' workouts at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
