The Mets looked down and out in Game 3 — when Pete Alonso hit a clutch three-run homer to take the lead.

The rest was history, and New York moved on to a matchup with NL East champions, the Phillies.

Philadelphia opened as series favorites at -185 on DraftKings.

Zack Wheeler and Kodai Senga will be on the mound for Game 1.

Will the Mets pull off another upset and beat the Phillies? Or will Bryce Harper and Co. be too much for the amazin’s to handle?

They passed the baton, and now to Maton

By Peter Botte

Phil Maton had a dicey eighth, but he got Alex Bohm to bounce to third for a force play with runners on the corners to maintain the sudden 5-1 lead.

Nimmo then adds another RBI single in the ninth, and the Mets need three more outs to steal Game 1 in Philly, with Ryne Stanek coming in.

And the Mets break through for a five-run eighth

By Peter Botte

WIth Wheeler finally out of the game, the Mets got the first two runners aboard in the eighth against Jeff Hoffman and then erupted for a five-spot.

Francisco Alvarez singled and Francisco Lindor followed with a walk after starting out 0-2 in the count before Mark Vientos scored pinch-runner Harrison Bader with a single to left for a 1-1 game.

Brandon Nimmo followed with a single to left off lefty Matt Strahm to give the Mets their first lead of the day, before Pete Alonso's sacrifice fly, J.D. Martinez's RBI single and Starling Marte's sac fly made it 5-1.

A brilliant seven IP by Wheeler

By Peter Botte

At least the Mets finally will get a crack at someone other than Zack Wheeler.

He lowered his career ERA in 12 postseason games to 2.18, allowing one hit over seven innings with no margin for error in a 1-0 game.

Wheeler threw 111 pitches and got 30 swinging strikes. Jeff Hoffman will replace him.

Alonso with a 3-K day

By Peter Botte

Game 3 wild-card hero Pete Alonso has accounted for three of Zack Wheeler's nine punch-outs through six innings of one-hit ball, including this one to keep the one-run lead intact.

The former Mets righty has thrown 89 pitches entering the seventh. Reed Garrett is coming in to replace Peterson.

Peterson keeping Mets in the game

By Peter Botte

Kudos to David Peterson, who has kept the score where it's been since Schwarber's leadoff homer against Senga in the first with three scoreless frames.

The Phillies are 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position, including Peterson's strikeout of Bryce Harper to strand a runner at second to end the fifth with the Mets still behind, 1-0.

Marte stays in the game

By Peter Botte

Starling Marte got drilled with a Wheeler fastball on the left forearm in the fifth, but he remained in the game both on the bases and in right field in the botton half.

Mets waste their first threat in fourth

By Peter Botte

Mark Vientos got the Mets' first hit with a bloop single to open the fourth, and Wheeler followed that with a walk to Bandon Nimmo.

But Alonso took a called third strike, before Jose Iglesias -- after at least one terrible called strike by home-plate ump Andy Fletcher -- hit into a 4-6-3 DP to keep the Mets scoreless.

Mendoza loses an iffy replay review

By Peter Botte

The Mets challenged a safe call at first base in the home third on a David Peterson pickoff attempt of Trea Turner, who looked like he might have been tagged by Pete Alonso before the runner's oven mitt got touched the bag.

Peterson then walked Bryce Harper, but the lefty escaped the inning on a flyout by Nick Castellanos. The Mets are still down by one.

Nothing doing for the Mets offensively

By Peter Botte

Wheeler has breezed througn one turn through the Mets' lineup through three scoreless frames.

They have no hits and only a walk to Jesse Winker through their first 10 plate appearances.

Not too bad from there...

By Peter Botte

Following Schwarber's leadoff blast, Senga's stuff has looked pretty sharp -- topping out at 97 mph -- after the latest long layoff. He's also fanned three and walked one over 31 pitches and still trails 1-0 through two innings.

The Japanese righty was shaking hands and taking pats on the back in the dugout, and it looks like Carlos Mendoza will turn to David Peterson in the third.
