Andrew Benintendi sparked the Yankees from the jump in Game 1 of the Subway Series.

The outfielder went 2 for 3, opening the scoring after getting hit by a pitch as the Yankees’ first batter of the night and then drove in a pair of runs to pace a 4-2 win.

It marked the first time in three tries the Yankees were able to top the Mets, with starter Domingo German out-pitching Max Scherzer to get the win.

Aaron Judge added to the offense with a third-inning homer off Scherzer, his first long ball since Aug. 12.

The victory marked the first back-to-back wins for the struggling Yankees since they took three straight from the Royals at the end of July.

The Mets will get a chance to split the series Tuesday when Taijuan Walker takes the bump at Yankee Stadium against Frankie Montas at 7:05 p.m.

Loaisiga perfect in four-out save to secure Subway Series win

By Greg Joyce

After losing yet another high-leverage reliever to the injured list before the Subway Series opener, Aaron Boone said the Yankees would “piece together” the ninth inning without a set closer.

On Monday, that meant asking Jonathan Loaisiga to record the final four outs and the right-hander delivered.

Loaisiga tossed a perfect 1 ¹/₃ innings to finish the game, recording his first save of the season in the Yankees’ 4-2 win over the Mets at the Stadium.

Max Scherzer not at his best in Mets' Subway Series loss

By Mike Puma

The Max Scherzer-Aaron Judge showdowns that highlighted last month’s Subway Series games resumed Monday where they left off, with the Mets right-hander striking out the Yankees slugger in his first at-bat.

Judge finally answered. In the third inning he snapped his streak of four straight strikeouts against Scherzer this season by crushing a 95 mph fastball into the right-field seats for a solo homer.

Overall, Scherzer allowed four earned runs on seven hits over 6 ²/₃ innings in the Mets’ 4-2 loss at Yankee Stadium. Scherzer was the losing pitcher in his first attempt to secure career victory No. 200.

Andrew Benintendi, Domingo German power Yankees to Subway Series win over Mets

By Dan Martin

The Yankees came into this Subway Series having lost three of four, not to mention 14 of their last 18.

And the Mets? They just took a series from the Phillies and had their ace, Max Scherzer, on the mound.

But Domingo German out-pitched Scherzer and the Yankees got another sparkling game from Andrew Benintendi to win their second straight game, with a 4-2 victory over the Mets on Monday night in The Bronx.

A bit of a struggle for Mad Max

By Michael Blinn

Monday marked the second straight start in which Max Scherzer gave up four earned runs, leaving the Mets righty potentially on the hook for his 100th career loss.

Scherzer got through 101 pitches on the night, exiting after 6 2/3 innings, seven hits, four runs, a walk and three strikeouts.

Now, Mets' $130 million man will have to wait for his 200th MLB win.

Trevor May took over on the bump for Buck Showalter's crew, getting out of the inning with a three-pitch strikeout of Anthony Rizzo.

Yankees get some insurance -- and some help

By Michael Blinn

Andrew Benintendi is now responsible for a third Bombers run tonight.

Isaih Kiner-Falefa ended up on second after Francisco Lindor's throw to first went into the Yankees' dugout, and then the Yankees shortstop came around to score on Benintendi's single to right.

It marked the second RBI for the night for the outfielder, who was acquired at the trade deadline.

Aaron Judge followed with a single to left, putting Benintendi on third, and ending Scherzer's night in The Bronx.

Now, we have a game

By Michael Blinn

The Yankees couldn't escaped this one unscathed.

Oswaldo Cabrera was charged with an error in the top of the seventh when he and Marwin Gonzalez collided and dropped Pete Alonso's floater in the shallow outfield.

Two pitches later, Alonso came around to score when Daniel Vogelbach launched a hanging curve from Domingo German over the wall to make it a 3-2 games.

The homer -- Vogelbach's fourth with the Mets since coming over at the trade deadline -- ended German's night.

German's line: 6 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), 3 strikeouts

Yankees manager Aaron Boone went to Toms River, NJ product Ron Marinaccio who stopped the bleeding by getting ground outs from Jeff McNeil and Mark Canha to end the half inning.

Yankees tack on another run

By Michael Blinn

Andrew Benintendi scored the first run of the game and four innings later, he drove in its third.

Isaih Kiner-Falefa reached on a ground-rule double that bounced over the wall in center and advanced on Marwin Gonzalez's sacrifice bunt.

Benintendi poked on 0-2 cutter from Max Scherzer right up the first-base line to send Kiner-Falefa homeward for a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth.

Judge finds his long-lost stroke

By Michael Blinn

Aaron Judge's homerless drought has ended.

The Yankees slugger sent his 47th dinger of the season -- and his first since Aug. 12 -- over the right field fence at Yankee Stadium to increase his MLB lead.

Mets hurler Max Scherzer had gotten Judge to strike out in the first, but Judge got ahold of the 95.7 MPH fastball. Per the broadcast, the long ball had an exit velocity of 109.6 MPH.

Tempers are flaring in the Bronx

By Michael Blinn

After Anthony Rizzo tried to take second despite the ball not being in play -- amid a challenge of Andrew Benintendi's first-inning score -- he had some choice for Francisco Lindor.

Whatever the Mets shortstop had to say. Rizzo wasn't hearing it.

German off to a nice start

By Michael Blinn

Yankees starter Domingo German is cruising to start.

He hit Mets leadoff man Brandon Nimmo -- the fifth time this season Nimmo has reached to open an inning via HBP -- but settled down nicely after, sending down Starling Marte, Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Daniel Vogelbach and Jeff McNeil in order -- the latter three on just nine pitches in the top of the second.

German got through the two frames on 19 pitches -- 14 of them for strikes.

A sloppy start in the Bronx

By Michael Blinn

Max Scherzer's first inning had its fill of sloppiness.

The Mets ace hit Yankees leadoff man Andrew Benintendi with a pitch before striking out Aaron Judge. With Anthony Rizzo at bat, Scherzer tried to pick off Benintendi, but threw an awkward bouncer that had to be saved by first-baseman Pete Alonso. Rizzo reached on a bloop single, sending Benintendi to third.

Benintendi was able to score on DJ LeMahieu's sacrifice fly -- a close play at the plate thanks to Starling Marte's laser from right field. While Scherzer attempted to get a review at third, Rizzo took off from first, leading to Scherzer throwing to second, with the toss heading into the outfield.

Amid the assorted gaffes, Benintendi was ruled safe at third base upon review, Rizzo sent back to first due to the ball not being in play and Scherzer minimized the damage by getting Josh Donaldson to line out to Marte.

End of 1: Yankees 1, Mets 0
