The Mets have announced they will put third baseman David Wright on the disabled list prior to Wednesday night’s game with a stress fracture in his lower back.

The team was poised to make the move before Tuesday night’s game, which was rianed out, bringing up first baseman Nick Evans from Triple-A Buffalo.

But the Mets will hold off on making it official until before the first pitch against the Nationals on Wednesday.

Sandy Alderson said Monday he hoped to avoid putting Wright on the disabled list, but the team ultimately decided it was the right thing to do.

Alderson said the course of treatment is “non-surgical” and typically requires rest.

Wright’s back has been bothering him since he made a diving tag on Houston’s Carlos Lee during a game April 19 at Citi Field. The team pressed him to have an MRI exam and Wright said he was shocked to learn the outcome, saying: “I thought it was just going to be a routine thing.”

Wright is batting .226 with six homers and 18 RBIs.

Ruben Tejada was in the clubhouse after being recalled from Buffalo after Monday night’s game. He is expected to play second base and Justin Turner will slide over to third base in place of Wright.
