LOS ANGELES — R.A. Dickey and David Wright can start making travel plans to Kansas City. Both Mets players were named to the National League All-Star team Sunday, when rosters were unveiled for the July 10 game at Kauffman Stadium.
But in something of a surprise, Wright won’t be starting at third base after a late surge in fan voting for the Giants’ Pablo Sandoval, who beat out Wright for the honor.
Wright was selected as a reserve by NL manager Tony La Russa. It was the sixth All-Star selection for Wright, who is batting .355 with nine homers and 50 RBIs.
Dickey, who leads the NL in victories, will be making his first All-Star appearance. The knuckleballer is 12-1 with a 2.15 ERA and 116 strikeouts. Dickey remains a strong candidate to be the NL’s starting pitcher – a decision La Russa still has a week to make.
Johan Santana made a case for the NL team by going 6-4 and 2.76 ERA, but didn’t make the cut.
Manager Terry Collins was previously selected by La Russa to serve on the NL coaching staff.
