The Subway Series will launch with a doubleheader, albeit not of the funky two-stadium variety, on Tuesday.
It’ll be a day-night twin bill at Yankee Stadium, with Game 1 set for 1:05 and Game 2 at 7:05, after the Yankees postponed Monday night’s contest due to inclement weather. The Yankees will keep their starting rotation in order, with Monday’s scheduled starter, Masahiro Tanaka, starting the opener and James Paxton the nightcap, while the Mets will flip their order, going with Tuesday’s scheduled starter, Zack Wheeler, in Game 1 and Monday’s pitcher, Jason Vargas, in Game 2.
With both teams at Yankee Stadium and the gates already open on Monday, the Yankees announced a weather-induced postponement at 6:51 p.m. Earlier, the Yankees had expressed confidence that the conditions would be playable. Since neither team had an appetite to make it up on Wednesday’s mutual off day — another mutual off day, July 29, was discussed — they opted to play two on Tuesday.
This will mark the fifth doubleheader in modern Subway Series history and only the second one-ballpark pair. In 2000, 2003 and 2008, the teams engaged in two-stadium affairs, playing one game each in Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium; the Yankees swept the first two and the last one wound up a split. In 2004, the Yankees swept the Mets in a Stadium doubleheader.
Fans holding paid tickets for Monday’s postponed game can use them for Tuesday’s Game 1 or exchange them for tickets to a 2019 or 2020 regular-season game at Yankee Stadium, subject to availability. Exchanges for these tickets must take place by June 30, 2020, and can be made at Yankee Stadium ticket windows beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
