Kodai Senga’s brutal start to the season was put on hold Tuesday with his placement on the injured list due to lumbar spine inflammation.

The Mets right-hander received an epidural, which prevents him from throwing for 7-10 days, after which he will be reevaluated. Christian Scott was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to replace Senga and is scheduled to start Friday against the Angels.

Senga informed the team’s medical staff of discomfort in his hip and back after his start Sunday in a doubleheader nightcap, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. An MRI on Monday showed inflammation in the L-4 and L-5 vertebrae.

“We didn’t know what we were dealing with until we got the MRI,” Mendoza said before the Mets faced the Nationals at Citi Field.

The Mets could use a break from Senga following his past three appearances. Senga lasted only 2 ²/₃ innings against the Rockies on Sunday and allowed three earned runs. Overall, he’s pitched to a 9.00 ERA in five starts this season.

David Peterson, after nearly two weeks in the bullpen, is returning to the rotation to start Wednesday. Freddy Peralta is scheduled for the series finale before Scott faces the Angels to open a nine-game road trip across three cities.

Scott struggled last Thursday in his return to big league action following a season spent rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and was demoted after the game because the Mets needed the roster spot for a bullpen arm. He walked five batters in 1 ¹/₃ innings against the Twins — allowing only one run — in a game the Mets won 10-8.

“It was his first time after missing a whole year — nerves, who knows?” Mendoza said. “It’s very rare, especially with the way he lost the strike zone. But we knew when we called him up it wasn’t going to be just one outing. But we needed to send him down because of the situation with the bullpen.

“Now we have an ideal situation, because we told [Scott] the other day: ‘You are going to make a lot of starts for us. You are an important part of this team moving forward.’ He’s going to make a lot of starts for us.”

Peterson regained his rotation spot, according to Mendoza, because of his solid work in two relief appearances. The lefty pitched to a 6.41 ERA in four starts before he was displaced from the rotation.

“He’s earned it,” Mendoza said. “He is throwing the ball well and here he is getting another opportunity, we are going to need him.”

Another starter, Sean Manaea, remains in a long relief role. The lefty has struggled in his past two appearances after early success in that spot.

Senga is no stranger to the IL. His season was interrupted last year by a hamstring strain that cost him a month — the injury occurred as he was covering first base and had to leap for a high throw from Pete Alonso. After his return from the IL, Senga struggled and ended the season pitching for Triple-A Syracuse.

In 2024, Senga pitched only once in the regular season after a shoulder strain in spring training landed him on the IL. Upon his return in July, he strained his left calf, costing him the rest of the regular season. Senga returned to pitch three times in the postseason.
