PHILADELPHIA — Count Mickey Callaway among those who would like to see a change to the September roster rules.

“There’s probably too many people active at this point,” the Mets manager said before Tuesday’s game at Citizens Bank Park. “I wouldn’t mind seeing a change in the rules.”

The Phillies were at full September roster capacity with 40 players — included were 16 relievers. The Mets had 33 players.

Callaway endorses the popular idea of calling up several players in September, all of whom would receive service time, but then capping the number who can be eligible to participate in a particular game.

Though the Mets have fewer players than the Phillies for this series, Callaway doesn’t view it as a disadvantage.

“The one strategy we thought about was to not water down what we have been doing and try to minimize the amount of guys that are up here,” Callaway said. “Just call up enough guys to rest guys here or there or not have to pitch certain guys if a game got lopsided.”

Jay Bruce was absent from first base for a fourth straight game, but Callaway indicated that was mostly a function of wanting Dominic Smith’s lefty bat in the lineup against Phillies ace Aaron Nola after Bruce played as the DH in Boston.

Bruce, who started in right field on Tuesday, is expected to resume at first base “pretty regularly,” according to Callaway.

Michael Conforto’s 22 RBIs for September, entering play, were the most in the major leagues. Trevor Story and Christian Yelich were tied for second with 17. Conforto’s seven homers this month were tied with Story for the lead.

The Mets have won seven straight season-series against the Phillies dating to 2012. The streak is the Mets’ longest against one opponent in franchise history, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Entering play the Mets were 49-25 against the Phillies over the last four seasons.
