Kevin Millwood opted out of his contract with the Yankees Sunday after the team did not promote him to the major leagues, the team announced.
The Yankees signed the veteran pitcher to a minor-league deal in March as insurance for their pitching staff. Millwood’s deal was filled with incentives and had a May 1 opt-out if he was not promoted to New York.
Millwood went 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA in three starts for Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre. His fastball was clocked at around 85-87 and scouts said he was unimpressive. He lasted just two innings in his final start for SWB.
The 36-year-old went 4-16 with a 5.10 ERA for the Orioles last year.
