Mets GM Omar Minaya said this morning that the club has told slugger Carlos Delgado that they plan to pick up his option for the 2009 season. The veteran first baseman is coming off a year in which he started poorly but finished as a serious MVP candidate with 38 home runs and 115 RBIs. The ’09 option is worth $12 million, and the Mets have until five days after the World Series to pick it up. Minaya said the option pickup is “a formality.”
