Aroldis Chapman has some competition atop the velocity leaderboard.

Cardinals pitcher Jordan Hicks broke Chapman’s 103.3-mph mark for the fastest pitch of the season on Sunday. Five times, including two 105-mph heaters. All in the same at-bat, a strikeout of Odubel Herrera. He became the first pitcher in at least the past 10 seasons — since verifiable pitch-speed data has been tracked, according to ESPN — to throw multiple 105-mph pitches in one at-bat.

Hicks, in his rookie season, is averaging 101.5 mph on his fastball and 100.3 on his sinker, per FanGraphs. Through 22 innings of relief, his ERA is sitting at 2.05 despite some pretty clear control issues. He’s walking over 6.5 batters per nine innings — nearly three more than the 3.68 per nine he’s striking out. It’s a strangely low whiff rate for a fireballer.

And that strikeout of Herrera? Two of the five pitches Hicks threw got away from the catcher, one of those being the third strike, which resulted in Herrera being safe at first.

Still, the show by the former third-round pick out of Houston is fun to watch.
