Yankees have no Juan Soto regrets after going ‘above and beyond’ comfort level in sweepstakes

By Mark Sanchez

DALLAS — In the face of their biggest offseason loss in recent memory, the Yankees have no regrets.

No regrets with the decision to trade for Juan Soto ahead of his walk season.

No regrets with a year in which Soto sure seemed content in what was hailed by all involved as an unusually happy clubhouse.

No regrets from a meeting in Southern California with Soto and agent Scott Boras that people from both parties say went well.

No regrets from an escalating, blind auction for Soto’s services that ended with an offer that, in total money, came just $5 million short.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts broke the news to reporters at the baseball Winter Meetings on Monday, though he expected Ohtani to be in Los Angeles’ lineup as a designated hitter.

The Dodgers are opening their 2025 season with a two-game series against the Cubs at the Tokyo Dome beginning on March 18.

Steve Cohen wasn’t convinced Mets won the Juan Soto sweepstakes — until he got his ‘yes’

By Jon Heyman

DALLAS — Mets owner Steve Cohen and his top baseball man, David Stearns, held a secret, last-minute lunch meeting with Juan Soto, Scott Boras and others in Soto’s inner circle Friday at Cohen’s home in Boca Raton, Fla. It was a very pleasant second get-together, one that solidified Cohen’s resolve to try to win the prize of the winter.

And yet, Cohen also came away from that high-powered confab convinced Soto was preparing to remain in pinstripes.

Cohen’s first thought, considering this meeting followed by a few weeks the one at Cohen’s Beverly Hills mansion: “We can’t keep meeting like this. I’m running out of houses.”

The other thought that wouldn’t leave Cohen’s mind — much more pervasive and to the point — throughout the weekend, almost right up until the time he got the “yes” on the historic $765 million deal that made Soto a Met, was that he wasn’t going to win this intracity competition. The negative notion that he couldn’t match or surpass one obvious Yankees advantage just wouldn’t leave his mind.

Mets talking to Jonathan Loaisiga in latest potential move for ex-Yankee

By Joel Sherman

DALLAS — The pipeline from the Yankees to the Mets may not be closed.

The Mets are talking to Jonathan Loaisiga, according to sources.

The righty fits two criteria that have value right now with the Mets — he has strong ties to Carlos Mendoza from their years together with the Yankees and is the kind of potential low-buy, high-ceiling bullpen arm that David Stearns gravitates toward.

Yankees didn't get in on Blake Snell

By Michael Blinn

Brian Cashman told reporters at the Winter Meetings the Yankees declined to make an offer to Blake Snell after a Zoom call with the pitcher, as they were held up by the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

Agent Scott Boras told Cashman the Snell talks were "moving fast."

"I told him I can't make an offer until I know what's going on with Soto first because I couldn't do both at that level," the Yankees GM said Monday.

Snell ended up taking a five-year, $182 million deal to join the Dodgers, adding yet another starry piece -- this one a two-time Cy Young Award-winner -- to their roster.

How Yankees should approach life after Juan Soto in MLB free agency

By Joel Sherman

DALLAS — At the hotel where these Winter Meetings are being held — the Hilton Anatole — a Scott Boras client coming off his age-24 season, Alex Rodriguez, signed a then-record 10-year, $252 million contract to leave Seattle for Texas after the 2000 season.

The Mariners won an MLB-record 116 games in 2001 without A-Rod.

Following the 2018 season, a Boras client coming off his age-25 season, Bryce Harper, left Washington to join the Phillies on a 13-year, $330 million contract.

The Nationals won the 2019 World Series without Harper, but with Juan Soto.

Dodgers aren't done trying to strengthen bullpen

By Justin Tasch

The Dodgers are still looking to add relief pitching after bringing back veteran right-hander Blake Treinen on a two-year, $22 million contract.

According to The Athletic, the Dodgers are interested in free-agent lefty Tanner Scott and Brewers closer Devin Williams, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Scott, 30, earned his first All-Star nod in 2024, pitching to a 1.75 ERA with 84 strikeouts in 72 innings while splitting time with the Marlins and Padres.

Williams, also 30, was limited to 22 games last season but had a 1.25 ERA, 14 saves and 38 strikeouts in 21 ⅔ innings.
