Enormous Max Fried deal signifies a serious shift in Yankees’ strategy

By Joel Sherman

DALLAS — At best, the Yankees reached agreement with a modern Jimmy Key in Max Fried — an athletic, imperturbable, championship-proven lefty.

At worst, the Yankees just agreed to an eight-year, $218 million pact with a pitcher who missed time the past two years with forearm issues, which often is a precursor to elbow issues and …

At the moment, the Yankees are revealing their post-Juan Soto hand — that there is no way to replace his offense, so they are going to try to have a fierce rotation and improve their defense.

By Andrew Battifarano

Just like that, another starting pitcher is off the market.

He's agreed to a three-year, $75 million deal, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported.

The Athletic previously reported the Mets had interest.

Mets and Yankees in play for reliever

By Andrew Battifarano

Both the Yankees and Mets are "in the mix" for relief pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga, The Post's Jon Heyman reported.

There is not, however, anything imminent expected on a potential deal.

He's been limited to just 20 appearances over the last two years, dealing with elbow inflammation in 2023 and needing UCL surgery this past season.

Red Sox, Yankees among teams with Alex Bregman interest

By Andrew Battifarano

Alex Bregman is one of the top infielders on the market this offseason, and both the Yankees and Red Sox are among the teams reportedly vying for his services.

MassLive reported Tuesday that the Red Sox, Yankees, Astros and Tigers have the best bids for the third baseman.

Alex Bregman throws to second after fielding a bunt by Detroit Tigers' Parker Meadows in the ninth inning of Game 2 of an AL Wild Card Series baseball game Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, in Houston.

However, according to the outlet, the Red Sox front office is not fully in agreement on Bregman, with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow among those who are less gung-ho on him.

Bregman, 30, hit .260 with 26 homers over 145 games for the Astros last season.

Nationals win draft lottery

By Andrew Battifarano

The Nationals haven't made a splash in free agency, but they did secure a big win Tuesday.

They won the MLB Draft lottery, meaning they'll pick first in next year's draft.

The top five are as follows:

  1. Nationals
  2. Angels
  3. Mariners
  4. Rockies
  5. Cardinals

The White Sox, who finished with a modern record of 121 losses, were ineligible for the top pick because they are a payer into baseball's revenue-sharing system and were picked in the lottery last year.

They will instead be picking 10th.
