A Mookie Betts deal appears to be imminent.
Baseball insider Ken Rosenthal reported on MLB Network Monday that the Red Sox could trade the former AL MVP within the next two days.
“I would not be surprised if it happened today or tomorrow,” Rosenthal said, adding that there’s a “good amount of momentum for the Dodgers” while the Padres were still engaged with the Red Sox as of Sunday.
This comes days after ESPN reported that the Sox and Dodgers were “deep into talks” about a trade for the 27-year-old Betts, who was awarded a record $27 million in arbitration for 2020 and will become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Los Angeles is in win-now mode and also has the prospect capital to make a huge trade. The Dodgers are believed to still want to make a big splash after failing to reel in hometown pitcher Gerrit Cole, who signed a nine-year, $324 million deal with the Yankees.
Though a Betts deal appears to be a fait accompli, the question is whether left-hander David Price would be involved. Price, 34, still has three years and $96 million remaining on his contract and is coming off a 2019 season in which he had a 4.28 ERA in 107 1/3 innings.
With spring training drawing near, Betts may find himself headed to somewhere in Arizona instead of Fort Myers.
