I am always looking to unearth new ways to quantify Mariano Rivera’s greatness, and I noticed this: His OPS against this year is .440. That not just leads the majors (minimum 60 innings), it leads the majors by Secretariat at the Belmont distance. The second best total is by the Cubs’ Carlos Marmol at .512. The next best in the AL is by Kansas City’s Joakim Soria at .518. The Angels’ Francisco Rodriguez, who just tied the all-time single-season save record, ranks 28th (.628), which is not even quite as good as Joba Chamberlain(.623).
