Omar Minaya said he has no plans to pursue a first baseman during what the club announced was an expected 10-week absence of Carlos Delgado, who had hip surgery on Tuesday. I don’t believe that. I suspect that all of the potential replacements cited by Minaya — Daniel Murphy, Jeremy Reed and Fernando Tatis — are role players. The more that will be asked of them the less you will receive.

Of that group (and you can throw Gary Sheffield and Ryan Church in, as well) the only one I suspect could surprise me is Murphy.
