Minor league reliever Drew Smith is coming to Queens from the Rays in a deal that sent slugger Lucas Duda out of town.
The righty fireballer has been lights out at three levels for the Rays this season, including Triple-A, pitching to a combined 1.60 ERA across 31 appearances. Smith has been clocked at 98 mph, and scouts believe he has end-of-game ability.
Several teams recently inquired about trades for Smith, but the 23-year-old now lands in New York.
Smith was a third-round pick out of Dallas Baptist University by the Tigers in the 2015 first-year-player draft. In 79 career minor league games, he has a 5-4 record with 13 saves and 140 strikeouts in 124 2/3 innings pitched.
