An MRI exam of Billy Wagner’s left shoulder today showed no structural damage.

The Mets closer is suffering from spasms in the muscle around his pitching shoulder, and the Mets describe his status as day-to-day.

The Mets open a three-game, first-place showdown with the Phillies tonight at Shea Stadium.

Wagner, a former Phillie, had trouble warming up Sunday in Cincinnati yet struck out three Reds in the ninth inning.

He was examined yesterday (a Mets day off) and returned today for the MRI exam.

Wagner has 24 saves and a 2.20 ERA this season.
