LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — The Mets will be thrilled if this is the only time Freddie Freeman hammers them this season.
The notorious Mets killer delivered a three-run homer against Bartolo Colon on Tuesday that led the Braves’ 3-2 exhibition victory at Champion Stadium.
Colon pitched two scoreless innings before Eury Perez and Mallex Smith singled in the third. With two outs, Freeman cleared the right-field fence.
“It was supposed to be a fastball away, but ended up closer to up and in,” Colon said through a team spokesman. “I didn’t get it where I wanted to get it.”
Colon had pitched two perfect innings Thursday against the Nationals in his initial Grapefruit League start.
“I’ve got command of all my pitches,” Colon said. “I’m hoping to go at least four innings in my next start. Overall, I feel pretty good.”
Manager Terry Collins said he liked Colon’s outing.
“Freddie kills us,” Collins said. “You didn’t see a lot of damage except for Freddie Freeman, and that’s what he does to us.”
Matt Harvey is scheduled to throw 50 pitches over three innings against the Marlins on Wednesday in his second start of the spring. The right-hander fired two shutout innings Friday against the Tigers in his first game appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2013, and he topped out at 99 mph on the radar gun.
But pitching coach Dan Warthen wasn’t concerned Harvey was overdoing it.
“It didn’t look like he was throwing 99,” Warthen said. “He did his delivery and it came out 99.”
Harvey, according to Warthen, may throw more sliders and changeups than in his last appearance.
Matt Reynolds came off the bench and delivered a single in his only plate appearance. The rookie infielder is 6-for-12 (.500) this spring and continues to make a strong impression on team officials.
“He’s made the plays at shortstop that he’s had to make,” Collins said. “He does a lot of things you like. They tell me he’s a great base runner, we haven’t seen a lot of it yet, but he’s certainly handled himself at the plate very well.”
