Raul Ibanez just rakes home runs in Yankee Stadium — whether it’s in pinstripes or any other uniform.
The veteran, who was the Bombers’ unlikely playoff hero last fall, was let go by the Yankees in the winter; and last night he came back to haunt them with two homers and six RBIs in Seattle’s 12-2 laugher.
At 40, Ibanez became the first player in history to homer three times in the ninth inning or later in one postseason. Last night, the crowd of 34,081 showed their appreciation with cheers of Ra-ul! when he came up in the first inning. Ibanez responded by crushing a grand slam off Phil Hughes into the Yankees bullpen to spark a seven-run eruption.
When Ibanez came up again they booed, and he replied with a two-run shot to left in the fifth off Brett Marshall.
“I’m very appreciative of that [reception],” said Ibanez, who hit a game-tying homer in the ninth and a walk-off homer in the 12th inning of ALDS Game 3. “I had a great time when I played here. Now my job is to beat them.’’
Ibanez, who added a game-tying homer in the ninth of ALCS Game 1, said the fond memories came flooding back.
“You can’t help but to think of that,” he said. “Obviously that was a great moment for us as a team and something I’ll never forget. I definitely remember that. But at the same time, last year is over and you’ve got to move on. My job is to help this team, so I try to just have good quality at-bats.’’
That’s what he has done lately. After the Yankees let him get away to Seattle, he started slowly, down to .148 at one point. But he hit a two-run shot off CC Sabathia Tuesday, and his three homers in two games doubled his total for the season.
“He’s had a lot of success in this park,’’ Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. “He’s the consummate pro. He doesn’t worry about anything. He’s going to ultimately be where he needs to be in the end. Because of the way he works and his knowledge base and all of the intangibles he has, you don’t want to bet against the guy.’’
The Yankees know that better than most.
